I like to read the story of Queen Abigail a lot because it teaches me a lot of wisdom as a woman. She was not only a beautiful woman, but an intelligent one too. Talk about beauty and brains!

Let's look at some of the distinguishing factors of this woman. Come with me to 1 Samuel 25:2-44

1. She was beautiful and smart vs 3. Who says beauty and brains don't go together. I think it was very interesting that the writer of that passage had to put it there, maybe he had a glimpse ahead to nowadays that people generally believe that if you are beautiful, you cannot be smart. As if beauty and brains don't match (like if you are blonde, you have to be dumb, right?).

2. She was approachable. vs 14. When some women know that they are beautiful, smart and rich, no one of lesser value can enter into their kingdom. However, this lovely woman was so good that even the common servant who could not approach Nabal, his foolish master, was able to approach Abigail. She did not look down on him. As a matter of fact, she heeded to his advice to see what she could do about the situation that her husband has put his whole family in. We cannot afford to despise the messenger of the Word of God. It does not matter his/her status in any ramification. It takes wisdom to know that God can use any one for us.

3. She did not waste time. vs. 18. Mrs. Nabal (at that time) did not call her bff or get on twitter or face-book to discuss the issue of her husband before she decided on what to do. She was filled with the wisdom of God enough to make a quick decision on the matter. Gloria Copeland once said, when you fill your heart with the Word of God when you don’t need it, it will come out of your mouth when you need it. And I add that you will not need to run around for the right word or scripture when you need it because it will already be there.

4. She knew how to offer worship. vs. 18-24.Abigail did not waste time before she decided to offer to the king an offering. She brought choice food and took to the king. She was totally unlike her husband. What do you do when issues arise in your life? Do you present an offering of worship before God (the King) or do you go murmuring and complaining about the situation? When she got to the king in verse 23, she got down from her donkey and bowed down before the king in worship.

 5. She was an intercessor. vs 24-28 Abigail was a good intercessor who reminded the king of his integrity and character. When we approach God to intercede for our loved ones, we need to bring to God His Word and promises in relations to them. (She even gave a word of prophesy while she was at it. vs 29 hallelujah!)

6. She was ready to serve. vs 41. When the king sent for her after the death of her husband, she came to him ready to serve him! Honestly, that was a little hard for me to digest, but I saw the wisdom in it. She was a humble, beautiful, smart woman. She did not present herself to the king arrogantly. She was ready to be a helpmeet.

She was a queen who only deserved a king like David. I like to think that it was because of her that David wept in 1 Samuel 30:4. The bible says he wept out aloud with the other men. I am sure he was thinking, “oh Abigail, my darling, what am I going to do without you?’ He pursued the enemy and recovered his precious wife with his other possessions. Abigail indeed was a Queen whom a foolish man like Nabal did not deserve. I am glad she found her king who treated her like royalty in return. She was indeed a helpmeet to King David.

I pray that as we meditate on the life of this wonderful woman, the Lord will grant our hearts’ desires, He will open our eyes to see these great qualities and emulate her in Jesus Name.

Blessings,
